Name: Jarod Albers
Subject: Social Studies
Lesson Name: States Project
Grade level: 5th grade
Date: October 8th, 2004 (1:30 to 2:30) One hour
Component #1 Desired Outcomes/Objectives:
- students will learn information, facts and other details about each of the fifty states. Even more specifically the two
states that they elected to create a poster for. (NE standard: 8.4.6)
Component #2 Instructional sequencing
1) In the previous day’s lesson we select states for them to begin their research on; this research will take
place in today’s lesson. Also in the previous days lesson we created what are called “handbooks” for the
children to write the information about each state down in.
2) Today I will present the students with a template to follow; this template show the students what data the must
collect for this project. (This data is easily findable, using sources I have provided.) Also the students will receive a
grading rubric that show my expectations for them.
3) Once the students receive the template and rubric, I will present only one of my two states that I already researched.
This will give them a preview of a modified presentation that they will be giving to class and putting in there handbooks.
Students will put the information of the state I present in their handbook. We will use the numbers previously assigned numbers
to determine where to put the information in their handbooks.
4) Once that information is copied in their handbook they can use the remaining time for research. I will model
how to find the data using sources and collect the data using notebook paper. They will use the two sources I have given them.
I will go around and observe and assist students in their research.
Component #3 Materials
1) Students: I-book lab, one lesson template and one lesson rubric, access to world books, notebook paper for data
collecting. Pencil.
2) Teacher: 26 copies of both the template and rubric, reserve the I-book lab, overhead projector, my two states to
present to the class.
Component #4 Assessment Plan
1) I will use the rubric given to the student to grade their overall project, from start to finish. Also observation
of the students “use of time” will also be factor into my assessment.
Component #5 Analysis and Reflection
- This lesson has gone well so far, and there is a good foundation laid out for this to continue.
